256+ VBR LAME mp3
Vinyl rip & scans from Fontana 688 106 ZL
A 1961 collection on UK label Fontana of material licensed from Pacific Jazz, this is a boss assortment of soul jazz from some of the best players in the scene. According to Dusty Groove, "Red Shirt" was never released on an album and is exclusively available here and on the Pacifc Jazz compilation This Is The Blues Volume 1. That's corroborated by the PacJazz discography where it is credited to Edwards 7, which seems to be an ad hoc septet built around Teddy Edwards as no members of his Octet were involved. Below is a list of all the stellar musicians involved but be sure to check the back cover scan for the lineups to each track.
1 Edwards 7 - Red Shirt
2 Les McCann - Oatmeal (from Les McCann in New York [Pacific Jazz ST-45])
3 Curtis Amy - Groovin' Blue (from Groovin' Blue [Pacific Jazz ST-19])
4 Teddy Edwards - Tempo de Blues (from Sunset Eyes [Pacific Jazz P-14])

6 Les McCann - Big Jim (from Les McCann In San Francisco [Pacific Jazz ST-16])
7 Ron Jefferson - Ivy League Blues (from Love Lifted Me [Pacific Jazz ST-36])

Hey Cheeba, This looks great. Pacific Jazz is a nice imprint. Hope you grabbed that Bud Shank w/ Donato set? It speaks well of this label.
J, just saw it last night before heading to bed and bookmarked it to come back to later! I'll be heading over today - can't wait to hear that one.
I like a lot of PacJazz stuff as well, especially the early 60s. They were also pretty far ahead of the world music curve too.
It's true about them being a premiere Latin Jazz label way ahead of others. Fantasy & Prestige too.
Thank you for your hard work and sharing. I appreciate it very much
Big Thanks. You have a great blog and some so cool posts! Best wishes.
